Geometrically Coherent Image Interpretation

Imagine having a picture and being able to transform it into a 3D environment, and then navigating through it like you were there. What is more spectacular, is that this system would be able to transform the pictures from Google Earth into spectacular 3D environments. Wow.

From the author of this video, about the software:
"Our system automatically constructs simple "pop-up" 3D models, like those one would find in a children's book, out of a single outdoor image. The system labels each region of an outdoor image as ground, vertical, or sky. Line segments fitted to the ground-vertical boundary in the image and an estimate of the horizon's position provide the necessary information to determine where to "cut" and "fold" in the image. The model is then popped up, and the image is texture mapped onto the model. This work is part of an on-going effort in Geometrically Coherent Image Interpretation. In our ICCV'05 paper Geometric Context from a Single Image, we provide a quantitative analysis of our system and extend our work by subclassifying vertical regions and using the geometric labels as context for object detection. In our newest CVPR'06 paper, Putting Objects in Perspective, we show how 3D reasoning can be used to aid in object detection."

Comments for Geometrically Coherent Image Interpretation

VR

One more peg in the wheel of the eventual release of a 3d earth augmented reality to allow for 100% weater and location navigations. Boys in Iraq could potentially just throw millions of photos of towns into a db. Then have camera mounted on a vehicile capture intermittent images and pull down all apporiate data for the image they are currently perciving in reality, as compared to the VR image with all meta data. Deeds, telephone numbers, resident names. all displayed back to a hanging heads up display on each soilder's helmet. Or civilian's sunglasses. YES PLEASE
